Every modern web browser has a built-in option that allows users to download a remote file from a specific source. This is a good thing because you no longer need to install another software or program just to download some text files, PDF documents, MP3s, FLV and MP4 videos, etc. However, there are also limitations to what you can do so you might want to consider learning how to download files from the command prompt in Windows.
So if you still don’t know how, go ahead and feel free to read on…
P7zip - the port of the command line version of 7-Zip to Linux/Posix. On 7-Zip's SourceForge Page you can find a forum, bug reports, and feature request systems. Compression ratio. We compared 7-Zip with WinRAR 5.20. FILE SETS: Mozilla Firefox 34.0.5 for Windows and Google Earth 6.2.2.6613 for Windows. However, the mantra is, if it can be done natively via the GUI then there is likely a way to do it via batch,.vbs, or some other type of script within the command line. Since windows has had the 'send to' option to create a zip file, I knew there had to be a way to do it via command line and I found some options.
How to download files from Command Prompt in Windows
- Download the free Windows executables: (for Linux, see below). To extract zip files on the command line, download unzip.exe here. This file is a copy of the original Info-ZIP unzip.exe version 5.52, provided for free under the Info-ZIP license.Alternatively, you may download it via the original Info-ZIP website.
- I used the zip.exe and cywin1.dll (3mb) to satisfy the ZIP and usage is one line. From the zip itself of using some batch code. I know can use a php bancompile'd with argv and pass a file to it. Download and installation

- On your preferred web browser (ex. Chrome, Firefox, etc.), click this link to download the complete Wget package (the filename is wget-1.11.4-1-setup.exe) of Wget for Windows. Save the file to your desktop or folder.
- Once downloaded, double-click the file to begin the installation/Wget setup process. Just follow the on-screen instructions and make sure that you choose “Full installation” which includes the Binaries as well as the documentation.
- When you reach the part where you will be asked to select the additional tasks, do not forget to check the option for “Download Sources” then click “Next”.
- Click “Install” then click “Finish” to proceed with the full installation.
- After which, you will be prompted to save another file called “wget-1.11.4-1-src.zip”. Just click “Save” to confirm. Simply proceed to the next step as soon as you’re done.
Usage
Wget for Windows offers basic and advanced usage. However, in this post, we’re not going to delve into its advanced commands and functionalities. Since the objective of this post is just to let you know how to download files from the command prompt, you simply need to remember this basic Wget for Windows command:
wget [URL]
- To use this command, open your Windows command prompt (click start > type cmd.exe on the search field then press “Enter”).
- On your command prompt, type the command wget [URL] – do not forget to replace the [URL] with the actual link or URL of the file that you wish to download. For example, you can type wget http://dottech.org/filexyz.zip then press “Enter”.
- If the wget command is working, you will be able to download any file from the World Wide Web with ease.
If you want to learn more basic wget commands, you can refer to this link.
Just remember that Wget for Windows won’t function unless you meet the following system requirements.
- Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 7, 2008 (Win32) with msvcrt.dll and msvcp60.dll
- libintl-2
- libiconv-2
- openssl
So that’s it. You’re done.

I have a batch file that outputs a text file. I thought it would be nice if I could zip it up too.
This will be used in an uncontrolled environment, so I can't make assumptions about the presence of third-party software products such as 7-Zip, etc. This needs to use Windows' now-built-in capability to zip files.

Here is an all batch file solution (a variation of my other answer) that will zip a file named
c:ue_english.txt
and put it in C:someArchive.zip
:Write access is required to the parent of the folder stored in
TEMPDIR
. As this is often not the case for the root of drive C TEMPDIR
may have to be changed.Write access is also required for the folder the
.bat
script is in (as it generates a file there).Zip Multiple Files Command Line Windows
Also, please note that the file extension for the compressed file must be
Peter MortensenPeter Mortensen.zip
. Attempts to use another extension may result in a script error. Instead, generate the .zip
file and rename it.![Zip file command line windows version Zip file command line windows version](/uploads/1/2/5/0/125045346/858921239.png)

It is possible to zip files without installation of any additional software (I have tested it). The solution is:
Run this in a command-line window to create a ZIP filenamed
C:someArchive.zip
containing all files in folder C:test3
:Zip File Command Line Windows 10
Where file
zip.vbs
contains:I haven't tested it for paths and file names containing spaces. It may work if quotesare put around the command line parameters.
How it works: the built-in zip functionality in Windows (Windows XP and later?) is exposed through COM interfaces from the Windows shell, explorer.exe - that is the 'Shell.Application' part. This COM interface can be used from a VBScript script because such a script can access COM components. To make the script fully self-contained it creates an empty ZIP file to get started (one could also create an empty ZIP file and copy it to the target system along with the VBScript script).
VBScript has been installed by default in every desktop release of Microsoft Windows since Windows 98.
CScript.exe
is part of Windows Script Host.Windows Script Host is distributed and installed by default on Windows 98 and later versions of Windows. It is also installed if Internet Explorer 5 (or a later version) is installed.8,5831616 gold badges6262 silver badges8585 bronze badges
If you are open to using PowerShell, zip capabilities are available in .NET 2.0 (PowerShell is .NET). Here's an a example (source) credit to Mike Hodnick:

You can eliminate the risk of timing out during compression by polling for existence of the compression dialog window. This method also handles the user cancelling out of the compression window.

If you are able to install the Resource Kit Tools, you will find a command line tool called COMPRESS that can create compressed archive files like zip.

This is a mutation of the accepted answer. I do a ton of automation tasks on up to thousands of files at a time, so I can't just sleep for 2 seconds and not care about it. I gleaned the workaround here, which is also similar to Jiří Kočara's answer here.
This will cause the destination folder to be pinged every 200ms, which is approximately as fast as Microsoft says to check for FS updates.

Here'a my attempt to summarize built-in capabilities windows for compression and uncompression - https://stackoverflow.com/questions/28043589/how-can-i-compres-zip-and-uncopress-unzip-files-and-folders-with-batch-f
with a few given solutions that should work on almost every windows machine.
As regards to the shell.application and WSH I preferred the jscriptas it allows a hybrid batch/jscript file (with .bat extension) that not require temp files.I've put unzip and zip capabilities in one file plus a few more features.

If on Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 you'll have PowerShell and .NET 4.5 so you can do this:
zip.ps1 (usage:
-directory <directory to zip up> -name <zip name>
):zip.bat (if you need a helper to call PowerShell for you, the directory is first argument and the zip name second):

The Windows command line now provides the compact command which, as far as I can tell, is native to Windows. That should meet the requirements requested unless I missed something.
